Health Care Reform in the United States - Implications for Training and Practice in Marriage and Family Therapy - Journal of Marital and Family Therapy

Abstract

Addresses the place of mental health care in general and marriage and family therapy in particular in the emerging health care system. The rising costs in health care are related to many of the forces that are transforming society: an aging population, changing disease patterns, increases in numbers of poor, legal liability, violent crime, fraud in the system, increased costs of health care technology, and focus on treatment of disease vs preventative medicine. Opportunities exist for marriage and family therapy since they represent a unique addition to many traditional provider panels. Suggestions for training and practice for the new health care system are presented.
